The Twelve Builds of Christmas 2019: Part 8

Part 8 of the 2019 12 Builds of Christmas follows the upgrade of a 1977 Porsche 911 SC rally car!

This LHD 1977 Porsche 911 SC had already competed as a marathon car on events including as the 2018 Road to Saigon Rally when it arrived at Wardington. Having experienced the challenge of several marathon rallies, the owner was sure that endurance rallying held real appeal as a long-term pursuit, so decided to take his 911 to the next level and sent it to us for upgrades across the board.

We stripped the car down to a bare chassis and found that the bodyshell was in very good condition, which was excellent news. The owner wanted to add strength but not weight, extend the range and get more air through the cabin. The mechanical upgrades would include our brakes and famous rally dampers.

Considerable modifications to the body shell included sealing off the front end to take our extended range fuel tank and space for the two spare wheels seen on Safari cars. We strengthened the front end by bracing the turrets and aded the mounts for our front and rear underbody guards. The rear beam was modified for damper fit and we added locking pins for the bonnet and engine lid.

The cabin was modified with a roof vent and our additional fresh air intakes. Seat tubes were added for Sparco competition seats and we stripped out the door internals to fit lightweight windows. A twin master cylinder pedal box was added, along with battery relocation and some other tricks to fit our upgraded wiring loom.

Further weight was removed via lightweight bumpers and front wings. When the fabrication was complete, the car moved into paint and was refinished in the original colour of Grand Prix White.

The engine was rebuilt to our torquey Safari specification and we also rebuilt the transmission. Building the car took several weeks and it eventually made its debut on the 2019 Adriatic Adventure Rally. The crew enjoyed a reliable rally and have booked on more events through 2020!
