The Roger Albert Clark Rally takes place this weekend. Despite committing a huge amount of in-house resource to the East African Safari Classic Rally, with our second wave of team members flying to Mombasa this Sunday, Tuthill Porsche retains enough in reserve to prepare a top-flight entry for one of the UK’s most evocative historic rally events.
This year, Stuart Rolt and Richard Pomfret will be flying the Tuthill flag in the Historic class on the rally. With an entry list including Gwyndaf Evans, Steve Bannister and Stiq Blomqvist, all in Escorts, the competition is sure to be fierce.
The Roger Albert Clark Rally is, of course, named after the fomer figurehead of British rallying, himself a Porsche 911 driver. Spanning 4 days, it runs over some of the most challenging and atmospheric terrain in the British Isles, including the trial of man and machine that is Kielder Forest, with night stages at Shepherdshield and Chirdonhead.
The Roger Albert Clark Rally recently announced their partnership with the Boucles de Spa Rally, which Tuthill Porsche won earlier this year; 2008 winner Patrick Snijers triumphant at the helm of one of our cars, following his successful training session at our Norway Ice Driving School a few weeks before. We also fielded Markku Alen and another former Boucles/Tuthill winner, Bernard Munster, and only narrowly missed out on a 1-2-3 finish. The partnership means that the winner of the Roger Albert Clark will get free entry to the Boucles de Spa event and vice versa: a nice bonus that is not to be sniffed at.
Let’s round off by reminding ourselves of Roger’s place in British rallying history, with this clip of Roger and Ian Grindrod in the delicious Group B Rothmans Porsche 911 SC RS on the 1984 RAC Rally. Francis Tuthill played a big part in preparing the shells for the Rothmans cars, so the clip is close to home in more ways than one.
This is SS1 at Donington, which features an almost complete anti-clockwise lap of the Donington GP circuit. Roger’s car control, as he drifts the 300bhp 911 through Redgate, is absolutely superb.
