Following a rest day in Buffalo, New York, the two Tuthill Porsche historic rally 911s on the 2015 Trans-America Challenge have been battling their way across North America, through a series of tough regularity rallies and speed tests.
Since the rally start, Peking to Paris winners, Peter and Zoe Lovett, have declared their intentions to repeat the success in a 2.5-litre Tuthill Porsche 911T, locked in a fight for the lead against the Triumph of Phil Garratt and Kieron Brown.
Also running well in the top five cars and less than a minute off the lead is the Tuthill Porsche 912 joint project of Mark and Colin Winkelman: shell and suspension built here at Wardington for completion by WEVO in San Francisco.
Further down the order is the beautiful SWB 911 rally car we built for Gavin and Diana Henderson. Sadly, the car fell victim to a broken driveshaft while the rally was in Canada and had to be recovered to a Montreal garage owned by a friend of ours for repairs. It was soon back in action, but sadly was given a 13-hour penalty for missing the day’s final checkpoint.
While the sizeable penalty took some competitive element out of the challenge, the driving has been good fun all the way: Gavin enjoying the feel of a short-wheelbase 911 on mud and gravel tracks. The rally continues across the US, with the next few days taking the cars through Duluth, Grand Forks and on to the rest day at Rapid City. Track the competitors’ progress at www.endurorally.com.
