Tuthill Porsche 911s have been testing at both Spa and Silverstone today, ahead of this weekend’s Spa 6 Hours endurance race.
Richard was out in David Huxley’s lovely 2-litre at Silverstone, testing some changes made specifically for Spa, including tweaks to the fuel system, brake setup and ignition. On track with several other classics also racing at Spa this weekend, he clocked up some consistently quick lap times on the national circuit and we came away satisfied.
Colin Paton and Ross McEwen were on track at Spa, for the traditional pre-event track day. Familiarisation was the name of the game for today, but the Spa weather was up to its usual tricks. The day started wet, so as the track dried after the severe downpours, we found ourselves sharing the circuit with Le Mans prototypes from the 1990s.
Watching out for these much faster cars hampered our programme a little bit, so we ran a shorter day than planned, mainly to bed in race brake pads and shake the car down. Thursday is the first official free practice day, so the boys will be back out tomorrow. The forecast is brighter so that should help us to clock up more track time. Everyone is excited about the event and especially racing in the dark!
About the Spa 6 Hours
The Spa 6 Hours is the highlight of the historic motorsport calendar. The stars of the European vintage racing scene descend upon this legendary Belgian circuit buried deep in the Ardennes, to pit their classic race cars against one another and against Europe’s most iconic racetrack.
Perhaps the most challenging aspect of Spa is the Eau Rouge/Raidillon combination. Eau Rouge is a quick left/right flick at the end of a downhill charge from the La Source hairpin, which then leads up a steep climb to the left-hander at Raidillon, and through a slight right-hand kink onto the main Kemmel Straight.
Momentum created on the downhill charge, maintained through Eau Rouge and preserved up the hill is the greatest weapon a driver has for overtaking here, as the long straight gives a great opportunity for drafting the car in front. The bravest pilots always do well at Spa, so we’re hoping for a very good showing in Belgium. Updates on social media throughout the weekend!
