Mechanical Fuel Injection (MFI) was initially perfected as military technology, to solve the problem of fuel starvation on carburettor-fuelled military aircraft capable of pulling high G-forces in flight.
Germany used the technology to great effect on the Daimler Benz DB 601 engine, more commonly known as the motive power behind the Messerschmitt Bf109. The first road car implementation was on the Mercedes Benz 300SLs of the mid 1950s: Moss and Jenks famously using the 300 SLR’s aerodynamic design and MFI-equipped 8-cylinder engine to set an unbeaten course record on the 1955 Mille Miglia.
Porsche used MFI on many of their road cars, including the 1973 Carrera RS. Porsche Motorsport used MFI very successfully too, such as on the 3.0 RSR engine seen here.
The upside of MFI on a classic 911 is that it is unbeatable in preventing fuel starvation, and getting maximum power from a flat six motor. Plus, it looks and sounds amazing. The downside is that maintenance has sometimes been a nightmare, with so-called injection specialists often making things worse. Not any more.
