Our restoration of the stunning Viper Green Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 is continuing. The finished bodyshell has now moved into the rally workshop and is being slowly pieced back together. We are using the original parts where they are still serviceable and genuine Porsche parts where required.
Still one of the most iconic 911s (and, for some, the most sought after road-going Porsche ever built), the 1973 Carrera RS is a true air-cooled icon. Reviewers have long raved about the characterful mechanical fuel injection on the 2.7-litre flat six fitted to the lightweight chassis and declared it to be the ultimate driver’s 911. Originally intended as a limited edition of just 500 cars, demand was such that over 1,500 examples were eventually built.
The Carrera RS market has been slightly off colour since the air-cooled market began to slow down towards the end of 2015, but the most recent RS sold at auction hinted that things may be on the turn. The Artcurial sale in Retromobile offered a very early RS with matching numbers, attractive original colour of Light Yellow (Hell Gelb), 96,000 kms from new and bills for substantial restoration within very recent history. The car sold for €536,400, prompting some to predict an upbeat RS market through 2018.
Of course, market prices only matter when a car is set to be sold and the owner of our Viper Green car has no such plans. The car is being rebuilt to use and enjoy, so we look forward to seeing it out and about across Europe later this year.
