Here at Francis Tuthill’s famous Porsche workshops in Wardington, Oxfordshire, we love Volkswagen Beetles. New or old, restored or original, custom or standard: you name it, we’re big fans.
It’s always great to have a Beetle on the premises. It reminds us that cars don’t have to be complicated to be fun.
Some of our happiest drives have been in Beetles. In 1977, Francis took part in the London-Sydney marathon in a Beetle, built especially for the event. The car carried a spare engine, which Francis ended up fitting in southern France! It also featured rooflights behind a protective perspex panel, and a centrally-mounted front spot. Francis and co-driver Anthony Showell finished 36th, returning to win the event in a 911 in 1993.
In 1992, Tuthill Porsche became the last team to rally a Beetle in a World Championship event, when Richard drove a Brazilian-built Fusca converted to Group A specification in the RAC Rally, co-driven by Francis. We reached the finish, which was more than could be said for many of our big-name competitors!
We still have lots of Beetle memorabilia around the place, and plenty of parts for Bugs of all ages. If you’re looking for Volkswagen service or parts and are anywhere near our base just outside Banbury, give us a call on 01295 750 514.
