We were out testing our cars again yesterday, this time on track at Silverstone, where Colin Paton was running his 1965 Porsche 911 2-litre in preparation for the Spa 6 Hours weekend.
The Spa 6 Hours is the most famous endurance race in the world of classic motorsport and the 2017 event takes place next month, from September 15-17. A full weekend’s racing envelops this prestigious six-hour endurance race around the legendary seven-kilometre Spa-Francorchamps circuit, buried deep in the heart of Belgium’s Ardennes mountains.
“Spa 6 Hours is the biggest event on the calendar, so we want to get our preparations right,” said Colin. “Today is about testing a few tweaks to the car and also trying out some new brake material. The new-spec engine fitted before Monza brought a big jump in performance, but we don’t want to gorge ourselves on it. All racing engines have a limited lifespan, so we will save the ultimate performance for Belgium and see how we go.”
Sharing the car with Colin for the Spa 6 Hours are Ross McEwen and Aaron Scott. Ross has driven the ’65 car on several previous outings, but Spa will be Aaron’s first time in the 2-litre. As a previous winner of the Spa 1000 kms endurance race, an accomplished Group C racer and a former British Endurance champion, we are looking forward to Aaron’s feedback on the car and seeing what lap times he can coax from the chassis.
