Tuthill restores Audi Quattro Rally Car

Mich

Francis Tuthill’s Workshop recently enjoyed the company of a rally classic: an original LWB S1 Audi Quattro UK rally car, dating back to the Quattro’s introduction to international rallying.

First registered in the UK on the 23rd of September, 1981, BRP 223X was amongst the very first Quattros in the country. Early UK Quattros were all left hand drive; right hand drive cars did not appear on these shores until the following year.

We carried out a swift restoration/recommissioning of BRP last year, ahead of appearances in the Trackrod and Manx Historic Rally events. A brief encounter with a dry stone wall on the Isle of Man Rally put it out of contention and eventually back to our body shop, but it should be back to fighting fit status very soon.

The Quattro came to international rallying in 1981, changing the sport’s destiny and associated road car technology forever. Tuthills have a long association with the Quattro and one of its most famous proponents in particular: the wonderful Michèle Mouton.

Michèle drove one of our cars with Francis navigating in the 2000 London to Sydney marathon rally, finishing second behind Stig Blomqvist (Francis had won the event in 1993).
